SLV GLOBAL Volunteering in Sri Lanka By uoeabroad 07/01/2019 Thanks to the Principal’s Go Abroad Fund, I was very fortunate to partake in a Psychology placement for 5 weeks in Sri Lanka as part of the organisation SLV Global. SLV.Global is a graduate led organisation that provides degree-specific volunteer placements in Sri Lanka. SLV offers project and cultural awareness training, leadership opportunities, and encourages volunteers to contribute to the continued growth and development of the team and its projects. SLV. Global is a graduate led project which was founded in 2010. A group of psychology students travelled to Sri Lanka, where there is limited resources and facilities for mental health. Currently, there are only five psychologists in the whole of Sri Lanka, which instantly goes to show how insufficient the services are.

Many people have been left with mental health issues and the healthcare services do not have the capacity to give everyone the support that is needed. I have worked with Nivendra for over 4 years where he has offered external consultancy and training to both staff and volunteers for SLV.Global in Sri Lanka. Nivendra is a great connector of people, he has exceptional skills as an empathic counsellor and will always listen first and then respond. In aim to tackle these problems, SLV.Global, a volunteering scheme which is in partnership with charity Sammuthana, The Kings College London resource centre for trauma, displacement and mental health in Sri Lanka, sends hundreds of volunteers per year to places including Sri Lanka, India and Bali in aid of improving the mental health system.
